Constant tiredness – how does it manifest itself?

Everyone is familiar with the annoying feeling of tiredness. It is also completely normal when we have had a short night or even suffered from a lack of sleep for several days. As long as you no longer feel tired once you have had enough sleep, this is not a cause for concern. But what if going to bed early and sleeping in doesn't help? If you are constantly tired, even after getting enough sleep for weeks or even months? This could be a sign of chronic fatigue.

This becomes noticeable when you feel regular or constant tiredness over a period of several weeks or even months, even after getting enough sleep. This constant tiredness is often accompanied by other symptoms, such as:

  • Frequent yawning

  • Unwillingness
  • Lack of motivation and fatigue

  • Reduced physical performance

Of course, not everyone will experience all of these symptoms, and the level of tiredness varies from person to person. While some people need a lot of sleep to feel rested, others only need a few hours. However, as a guideline, adults need around 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night. Children and the elderly tend to need more sleep. On average, women are more likely to experience tiredness than men, possibly due to factors such as menopause, which can cause sleep problems.

In addition to age or gender, the seasons can also play a role. In winter, most people are more tired than in the warmer seasons. The longer darkness and the cold can make the body tired. A lack of sunlight and thus of vitamin D can also be a cause of tiredness. If you are constantly tired, it can be helpful to take vitamin D supplements in winter.

Constant fatigue – possible causes

There are many causes of constant fatigue that can go beyond mere lack of sleep:

  • Mental illness or stress: Mental illness or stress can lead to sleep disorders and cause chronic fatigue.
  • Iron deficiency: A lack of iron can lead to fatigue because the body does not produce enough red blood cells.

What can you do about constant tiredness?

In addition to healthy sleep hygiene, there may also be physical causes such as iron deficiency, thyroid problems or sleep disorders. If your fatigue persists and you are not sure what the cause is, it is best to see a doctor. This is especially true if you are suffering from other symptoms such as shivering, nausea or malaise.
